What Is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping is an ancient healing practice that has been used in many cultures around the world for thousands of years. Early forms of cupping were seen in First Nations communities, where hollowed animal horns were used to draw out toxins from snakebites and skin conditions. Over time, bamboo cups replaced animal horns, and eventually glass and modern plastic cups became the tools we use today.
In China, cupping was refined and became an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was used not only for healing and pain relief but even during surgery to help divert blood flow. Other ancient cultures — including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans — also recognised its therapeutic benefits, and the practice spread through Europe and later to the Americas.
Today, cupping has evolved into a recognised therapy in its own right. While it is still deeply connected to TCM, it’s also widely practiced by massage therapists and holistic healers around the world. Modern cupping focuses on supporting circulation, easing muscle tension, and promoting the body’s natural ability to restore balance.
How Does It Work?
For my treatments, I use Korean vacuum cups because they allow the pressure to be adjusted and controlled, making the therapy gentler and more tailored to each client. These cups come in different sizes and are pressurised with a hand pump to create suction. The gentle pull between the cup and the skin creates warmth and helps stimulate circulation in the targeted area.
Once applied, cups are usually left in place for 2–4 minutes, depending on your individual needs. During this time, the suction encourages fresh blood flow to the area, helping to release tension in the muscles and support the body’s natural healing processes.
You may notice temporary marks after your session — these are not bruises in the traditional sense, but rather signs of increased circulation and the release of stagnation in the tissue. Marks can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week, but not everyone experiences them, as every body responds differently.
Please note: I remain with you throughout the entire treatment and carefully monitor each cup to ensure your comfort and safety.
What To Expect?
Cupping therapy through suction and negative pressure may assist with releasing very rigid/tight soft tissue, draining excess fluids and toxins, it loosens adhesions, lifts connective tissue, breaks up and disperses cellulite. It may assist blood flow in areas in the body that are stagnant within the skin and tissues in the muscles.
Who Can Experience Cupping Therapy?
However with young adults under 18yrs old an adult needs to be present at all times. Is cupping painful? In most cases cupping feels extremely pleasant. Cupping is generally not painful, however some people who suffer from fibromyalgia or other chronic muscular disorders may feel minimal discomfort and should mention this to me as this may not be the suitable modality. Muscle tension and tenderness often continues to improve for many hours after the session is completed.
Please DO NOT undergo this therapy if you have or had:
recent surgery, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and other vascular irregularities;
open wounds, abrasions, ulcers, sunburns, burns or recent skin trauma;
are pregnant;
Haemophilic or predisposed to blood haemorrhages;
severe cognitive impairment (i.e.: dementia);
skin sensation (i.e.: diabetic patients);
heart conditions;
long fasting periods;
24hrs after a sports injury and;
24hrs after a drinking binge (NO drinking).

Cupping Massage Therapy FAQs
Is cupping scientifically proven?
While cupping has been practiced for thousands of years in traditional medicine, scientific evidence is still limited. Research is ongoing into its potential benefits, including improved circulation, muscle relaxation, and pain relief.
Where are cupping cups placed?
Cups can be applied to many areas of the body, most commonly on the back, shoulders, and legs. Placement is often guided by muscle tension, areas of pain, or along meridian lines used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Does cupping remove toxins?
There is no scientific proof that cupping “removes toxins.” Instead, cupping is believed to support circulation and may assist the body’s natural healing processes.
What does “stagnation” mean in cupping?
Stagnation refers to areas of the body where circulation is poor or blocked, often due to injury or tension. Cupping may help to stimulate blood flow and encourage movement in those stagnant areas.
What does the colour of the cupping marks mean?
Cupping marks (which look like circular bruises) vary in colour depending on the individual and the level of stagnation. They are caused by broken blood vessels just under the skin and typically fade within a few days to a week.
What happens if cups are left on too long?
Cups are usually left on for 5–7 minutes. Leaving them for longer may increase the risk of blistering or very dark marks. Anna, a trained therapist will monitor your skin closely to ensure safety.
How often should I get cupping treatments?
Frequency depends on your needs. For injury recovery or chronic tension, once a week may be recommended initially, followed by less frequent sessions. For general wellness, once a month may be sufficient.
Does cupping hurt?
Cupping may feel tight or warm, but it should not be painful. Some people even find it deeply relaxing.
Is cupping safe?
Yes, when performed by Anna, who is a trained therapist, you are in safe hands. However, it may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions (e.g., blood clotting disorders, skin conditions, or pregnancy). You must always disclose with Anna, your practitioner first.
Can I exercise after cupping?
It’s best to avoid intense exercise or hot showers immediately after cupping, as your skin and muscles may be more sensitive than normal. Gentle movement and hydration are recommended. Having a lukewarm shower or bath is best.
Will I always get marks?
Not necessarily. Some people develop visible marks while others don’t, depending on skin type, circulation, and treatment area. The marks usually last 4-5 days.
