What Is Ear Candling?
Ear candling is often described as an ancient wellness practice, though its exact origins remain a little mysterious. Unlike some therapies with clear archaeological evidence, there are no physical remains of ear candles found in museums. Instead, the tradition has been passed down orally through different cultures over time.
One modern insight into its history comes from research in the 1990s, when Hungarian ethnographers spent time with the Siberian Khanty people. Their findings suggested that ear candling had been used as a traditional health-supporting method within that community. Today, companies like Naturhelix in Hungary continue to make ear candles inspired by these traditional practices, adapting them for safe modern use.
The Ear Candling Process
During your session, you’ll be invited to lie comfortably on a massage table with your head supported by a soft pillow. You’ll rest on one side while the ear candle is gently placed in position.
The candles I use are 40 cm long, 1 cm wide, certified organic, vegan-friendly, and TGA-approved practitioner-only candles, ensuring the highest quality and safety. The tapered end of the candle is placed inside a protective cone, which then rests gently in your ear. For extra care, a towel is placed over your head and hair, along with a protective base around the candle.
Once lit, the flame creates a gentle warmth and a soothing crackling sound as the candle burns. Many clients describe the sensation as deeply calming. Each ear takes around 30 minutes, during which the candle is carefully shortened in stages to maintain safety. Meditative music is played throughout, helping you to fully relax and enjoy the experience.
After the session, it’s best to take a little extra care of your ears. For the next 24–48 hours, protect them from cold winds and avoid getting water inside (wearing a shower cap is recommended). Within a couple of days, your ears will naturally return to their normal wax production.

Are ear candles effective?
In my experience, yes. I’ve been working with ear candling for over 11 years and have supported more than 600 clients. Around 90% report feeling lighter, clearer, or less congested after their sessions.
What is the white stuff that comes out of ear candles?
The white, powdery residue you may see after a session is the condensation of the cotton and beeswax (or soy) material as the candle burns. It is a natural byproduct of the process.
Do ear candles help clogged ears?
Yes, many people find relief from feelings of blockage or heaviness. However, if there is a lot of buildup, more than one session may be needed. I’ll always discuss this with you during your treatment.
What are the benefits of ear candling?
Clients often describe a sense of relief from congestion, lightness in the head, improved clarity, and deep relaxation. Some also experience reduced pressure around the sinuses and a soothing, calming effect.
Why do some say ear candling is bad for your ears?
Ear candling is safe when performed by a trained practitioner using high-quality candles. Problems usually occur when people attempt it at home without guidance, or when poor-quality candles are used. I use only TGA-approved, practitioner-grade candles and monitor the process carefully throughout your session.
Does ear candling hurt?
No — the experience is gentle, warm, and relaxing. Many clients even drift into a meditative state during their session.
How long does an ear candling session take?
A typical session lasts around 30 minutes per ear, plus a few minutes for relaxation and aftercare.
How often should I get ear candling done?
It depends on your needs. Some people book a session every few months for general maintenance, while others come more often if they experience congestion or sinus pressure. I’ll recommend a frequency based on your personal situation.
Will I always see something in the candle after a session?
Not always. What you see inside the candle isn’t necessarily earwax — it’s mostly residue from the candle itself. The real benefits are in how you feel afterwards.
Can children have ear candling?
Ear candling can be suitable for children, but only with parental consent and when it’s safe and appropriate for their age and needs. Please discuss with me beforehand if you’re considering it for your child.
Is ear candling safe for everyone?
Ear candling is generally safe, but it is not recommended for people with perforated eardrums, ear infections, ear tubes, or recent ear surgery. If you have concerns, it’s always best to check with your healthcare provider first.
Can I go back to normal activities afterwards?
Yes — but it’s best to avoid swimming, getting water in your ears, or exposing them to strong wind for about 24–48 hours after your session.
