Learn how to set an intention

We are in an interesting time period on Earth and It’s during this period of ever growing lockdowns and disruptions to our everyday lives that we are all grappling with our hopes and dreams. Some people have described it as groundhog day on repeat or “I’m stuck in a rut”. I totally sympathise, though I find that sticking to a routine, starting from making the bed, completing some stretches helps me start my day off, but that’s me and the cat. For those with little humans, it would need to be scheduled in, of course, I understand.

However, making time for yourself whether it be five minutes or an hour is plenty to reflect over the day and prioritise what is important. For me, the simple and easiest way is setting intentions. I do work with my hopes, dreams, and goals as each is a stepping stone in achieving my true happiness and joy.

I start by finding and creating an altar, or an area in my home away from everyone and the noise. I decorate my altar with flowers, candles, crystals, photos of those I love, and jewellery that means so much to me. It’s my connection to the universe. It’s also a healing space for those passed on or living, depending on who is in the photo. Once my altar is created, I burn a candle, I sit and look into the flame of the candle, and visualise a peaceful place, either a beach or a rainforest scene, somewhere familiar where I feel grounded. Here I am setting my mind, to calm my thoughts and empty the noise, to do this I focus on describing the place I am visiting in my mind’s eye.

Once I have a sense of peace I begin to set my intentions. I visualise what I want more in my life, what I need to heal and shift, and what steps I think I need to take to get support for my dreams and goals. I often write them down and go over them. It helps me stay focused and continue to connect to them, heal the emotions that come up from making decisions, and keeps me accountable. Some people I know burn their intentions and this too works but that is often done during a new moon.

The power of setting intentions is powerful, so focus your energy on a particular dream or goal and allow the energy to propel it forward.
