1. Ear Candling: It's Origins
Although ear candling is said to be an ancient practice, its origin and history are unclear as there's no fossil remains or ear candles found in a museum, but rather an oral tradition passed down through generations.
However, the manufacturer of Naturhelix ear candles, a Hungarian company, "have found surprising and undeniable evidence for the ancient use of ear candling as a health-promoting method: Hungarian ethnographers spent a long period of time in the ’90s with the ancient Siberian Khanty people and did ethnographic research on their lives" (CMA, UK). The researchers spent time with the Khanties, and had the opportunity to record, on film, a Khanty father treating his child with an ear candle made by himself (Youtube clip below). No one seems to know for certain, where the origins of ear candling began but many have questioned it.
2. How ear candles are made?
The ear candles that I use in the clinic are TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) approved practitioner-only candles as they are handmade locally in Melbourne and you need to attend a training day to be approved to use them. These candles are made of organic cotton which are wrapped on rods while the wax is coated on the outside of the cotton. Once the wax has set and dried the candle slides off the rod. There is no wax on the inside of the candle.
3. The million dollar question: Does ear candling really remove wax?
When you use a cotton bud to clean your ear you notice the stain of an orange - ish yellow colour, right? Well, from my photos I see the wax come out during the process but many would say it isn't wax. I leave that up to my clients they are pretty good at deciding for themselves.
4. What clients experience.
Ear candling is a process that takes approximately 60 mins, 30 mins per ear. Many clients have a range of experiences from feeling light, at ease and relaxed to feeling on top of the world. Everyone has a different perspective and I have been lucky to have fantastic clients that enjoy the process.
5. Ear candling's many secrets !
Of late the ear wax which is tapped out of the candle every two inches has been telling me amazing stories for each client. It allows me to see what has happened in their world. The ear wax is a form of “tasseography”, used in tea leaf and coffee cup readings. This process can be traced all the way back to medieval times, in Europe and the Europeans’ found it to be an easy way to see what was to come in their and their families lives. An example can be seen below.
My client's ear wax reading not only showed letters but a mother and child. I asked if my client knew anybody having a child because someone is having a baby. The wax came from the right side, so her husbands side and she later confirmed this with me.
